Day 156: And as I always say, if it’s not baroque, don’t fix it!-- Cogsworth

And as I always say, if it’s not baroque, don’t fix it!-- Cogsworth, Beauty and The Beast

As Lumiere and Cogsworth give Belle a tour of the castle, Cogsworth makes this joke about the architecture styling of one of the wings in Beast's castle.

This joke is one of my favorites. It is one that at first goes over your head because it sounds like "If it's not broke, don't fix it". Yet Cogsworth says "Baroque", which is a type of architecture, music style, and art dating from the early 1600s to the 1740s.  Have you ever come across any of this type?

If you look very carefully in the animated movie, you can find a lot of diffrent bits of Baroque architecture and art. When you see Beast's human portrait the frame is of a Baroque style with the ornamental style frame. In the scene where this quote takes place it's seen in the architecture with how there is a sense of movement with the walls, course the animated armor men help reinforce the Baroque architecture that the castle has. It is seen again towards the end of the movie as many transformations happen. There's many more subtle nods to the Baroque period throughout the movie, but I'll let you find them yourself.

So until next time, Keep Cooking with Character!
