"It is like a song in my heart. A song with love... and beautiful memories.-- Jose Carioca, The Three Caballeros
Everyone has a place like this, whether it's a place found on a map, or perhaps somewhere in your dreams because it doesn't exist yet. No matter where it is, it will always be in your heart. Perhaps your "it" isn't a place but rather a favorite dish or an item, like a stuffed animal or blanket.
I am lucky to have lots of places like this. Some on a map I can still visit like my parents house or Walt Disney World. Others on a map I can't physically go to because my grandparents are no longer living, but I can still visit them in my memories. I have lots of recipes as my "it song" too. One of my most dearest recipes also take me back to some of my most favorite memories.
As a child, just before school started, we would take our one of our yearly trips to visit our out-of-state relatives. One of the many houses we would visit was my grandfather's. He had the hugest garden I have ever seen. We're talking rows and rows of fresh fruits and veggies. You name it he had it! He would let us help with some of the harvest, which ended with us usually getting to snap beans and peas, for dinner that night. But my most favorite memories of those times were when he would let me help him make homemade coleslaw from the harvest. I still remember when he said I was finally old enough to use the large knife to shred the cabbage while he gathered the dressing ingrediants. Sadly he is no longer with us so I can only visit his house in my memories, and when I do its always harvest time and we're making coleslaw together and he's got a jar of his homemade apple butter he canned himself just waiting for me. Once you have coleslaw straight from the garden like that and his homemade apple butter, no store bought kind will ever taste the same. This is just one of many places and recipes that bring a song to my heart. Hopefully you've got a place just as wonderful as this.
May you always have a place that brings a song to your heart and Keep Cooking with Character!
