Day 21: Well, that's human nature for you...- Prof. Sterling Holloway

"Well, that's human nature for you... even if you're a penguin."- Professor Sterling Holloway, The Three Caballeros

This little gem is found in The Three Caballeros package film just after Pablo, The Little Cold-blooded Penguin realizes he's still not truly happy with things, even after he got his wish. The Narrator,  Sterling Holloway,  makes this remark when he sees Pablo still misses his friends, and acts extremely human-like.

By now, it's safe to say everyone has seen an animal exhibit human-like behavior at some point in their lives. Most notably, dogs and cats, like dogs who say their prayers before a meal or look guilty when they know they've been caught or cats who give that "you touch you die" look or meow their orders until their "staff" does it/talks back to their human staff. If you've not, just look it up online and you'll find a ton of memes and videos. Even the bigger wildlife seems almost human at times, like bears who like stealing food out of garbage cans.
As humans, we sometimes want to keep up with The Joneses or just aren't happy with what we have. Someone could have the world, the best of everything, never have a need for money, yet they could feel like they need more because of a fear of missing out. One of the hardest things in life is to be happy with what you have already. Sure the jealousies of wanting something newer and shinier, like the newest model car when all you have is a beat up old clunker, are real but the trick is to be happy with what you have. The trick to being happy with what you have is all in how you look at it. Take the car for instance. Instead of being focused on its looks, focus on the fact that it runs. It's better to have a beat-up looking car that runs than a pristine car that doesn't. Even things like experiences cause the same feelings. It's the same thing. Just look for that silver lining, such as if you're able to just barely pay for a vacation now but know if you wait one more month the extra funds will get you an even better vacation than if you were to go when you could just barely afford it. So instead of moping around that you can't go on the spot because everyone else is going on trips, just let the excitement build for when you can and you'll have an even better story to tell. Or say someone got a bigger piece of your favorite kind of pie than you. You could be bitter or be grateful. You never know what the other person's going through. That other person may not have eaten for days, though they look "well-off", or they may have eaten 10 minutes ago. Any way you slice it, you got some of your favorite pie. Savor it every piece because they didn't have to include you but they wanted to.
Until next time, remember to find happiness in the little things and Keep Cooking with Character.

Day 22: It is like a song in my heart...-- Jose Carioca

"It is like a song in my heart. A song with love... and beautiful memories.-- Jose Carioca, The Three Caballeros

The "it" Jose speaks of is a place called  Baía (Bahia), Brazil. He is describing it to Donald Duck, who had never been in The Three Caballeros during the Baía segment.

Everyone has a place like this, whether it's a place found on a map, or perhaps somewhere in your dreams because it doesn't exist yet. No matter where it is, it will always be in your heart.  Perhaps your "it" isn't a place but rather a favorite dish or an item, like a stuffed animal or blanket.
I am lucky to have lots of places like this. Some on a map I can still visit like my parents house or Walt Disney World. Others on a map I can't physically go to because my grandparents are no longer living, but I can still visit them in my memories.  I have lots of recipes as my "it song" too. One of my most dearest recipes also take me back to some of my most favorite memories.
As a child, just before school started, we would take our one of our yearly trips to visit our out-of-state relatives. One of the many houses we would visit was my grandfather's.  He had the hugest garden I have ever seen. We're talking rows and rows of fresh fruits and veggies. You name it he had it! He would let us help with some of the harvest, which ended with us usually getting to snap beans and peas, for dinner that night. But my most favorite memories of those times were when he would let me help him make homemade coleslaw from the harvest. I still remember when he said I was finally old enough to use the large knife to shred the cabbage while he gathered the dressing ingrediants. Sadly he is no longer with us so I can only visit his house in my memories, and when I do its always harvest time and we're making coleslaw together and he's got a jar of his homemade apple butter he canned himself just waiting for me. Once you have coleslaw straight from the garden like that and his homemade apple butter, no store bought kind will ever taste the same.  This is just one of many places and recipes that bring a song to my heart.  Hopefully you've got a place just as wonderful as this.
May you always have a place that brings a song to your heart and Keep Cooking with Character!
