It was rather hard finding a quote for Make Mine Music, the 1946 film. Instead of each segment having narration bridging the parts together, this film opts for music. So in a rare twist, today's quote is a song sung by The Andrews Sisters; Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet: a love story between two hats who fall in love and plan a future together in the store and Johnnie's quest to find Alice after she is sold to a fashionable 1920s New York lady.
Even though it features two hats instead of two people, many of the same themes are found. Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl falls in love with him in return. They go through some trials to see if their love can withstand the test of time. And they live happily ever after.
This has always been one of my favorite segments in any of the "package" films. I've always been a sucker for romance and love to be romanced in what's now considered to be old-fashioned: guy picks the girl up, pays for the nice date, drives her back home, romances the girl, that sort of thing. I do love to see chivalry in action in this modern age. There's just something about seeing Johnnie still searching for his love even in times of darkness that touches my heart. Then when it seems like he's given up all hope, he finds her. I have always wondered what Alice went through while she and Johnnie were separated. Did another hat try to romance her and she couldn't get her mind off Johnnie? Did she get to live the high life or was she just as downtrodden as he but had someone show her the kindness to keep her nice in a hat box? I like to imagine she got to still live the high life because of how nice she looked at the end. Only the storytellers know that answer. So our imaginations get to run wild.
The last part of the song says it best: "Don't give up hoping and don't give up dreaming. Just remember that true love will come smiling through." So never forget that!
Until Next time and remember to Keep Cooking with Character!
