Day 90: I was just wonderin, are we good guys or bad guys?-- Little John

I was just wonderin, are we good guys or bad guys?-- Little John, Robin Hood

This tasty morsel comes to us when Little John, Robin Hood's right hand man, starts to question their thieving ways after they just stole some money from The Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1973 animated classic Robin Hood.

In Prince John and The Sheriff of Nottingham's eyes, Robin Hood and Little John are bad guys because the two take the money from the prince and give it to the poor. Yet in the eyes of the people of Nottingham, who Prince John taxes to death, Robin Hood is a good guy because he makes it so that they can continue to pay their taxes and get food for their families.

Good cop, bad cop. Good guy, bad guy. It's really all in how someone looks at it. Where one sees something good, someone may see something bad. On one hand Robin Hood is breaking a law by stealing from Prince John and The Sheriff's carriages and Prince John spends the whole movie trying to catch him. On the other hand, The Sheriff of Nottingham would steal it straight out of the poor box at Friar Tuck's church or right out of Otto's cast and Prince John wouldn't bat an eye. So it's a bit confusing in that sense. Yet either way because both of them took money without permission it's stealing which is wrong.

This quote, though it's more about stealing from the rich to give to the poor, is all in the eye of the beholder. For instance, Robin Hood sees them as good guys because they are returning what was rightfully the people of Nottingham's. Yet Prince John, King Richard's little brother and acting King of England, sees them as bad guys because Robin Hood is taking what he feels is his. Later on, we get King Richard's views on Robin Hood after he returns from The Crusades, but I'll not be spoiling it for anyone who has yet to see this rather cute adaptation of Robin Hood's story. Which side do you see Robin Hood, Little John, Prince John and The Sheriff on?

Until next time, remember that there are two sides to every story and as always Keep Cooking with Character!
