This bit of advice if you will comes to us when Robin Hood and Little John are dressed as gypsy fortune tellers in one of their many schemes to take the villiagers money out of Prince John's grubby paws and back into theirs.
Have you ever had to do that or been told to do this? Were you trying to a recall an old memory? Perhaps you were trying to recall some facts for school or maybe you were in a performance and you were having to remember your line picturing the page that it was on. Did it work better for you to concentrate with your eyes open or closed?
Sometimes we need to just shut out all the diffrent things we see and just listen to what we hear. It's a known fact that when we turn off one of our senses, the others will become heightened like never before. For example, if we don't use our eyes, we tend to pick up on little sounds we don't always pay attention to and other smells that are around us. Sometimes we can even see old memories or daydreams playing in our mind when we do that too. As crazy as it sounds, without our sight sometimes we can concentrate even better than before. Yet I know this does not work for everyone. I for one need a bit of background noise, yet I still find myself closing my eyes every now and then because I get overwhelmed by with everything I see. Sometimes, I will just go outside to blog and close my eyes and listen. One of my favorite sounds is of my little Cardinal friend who likes to visit and sing as I type. Sometimes when he's out and I can't see him, I'll close my eyes and just listen to his sound, then make my way to where he's at and see if I can thank him for his song in person. When I can't I'll still thank him for his song because it lifts my spirits and sometimes even unblocks stuck things, like when I'm not sure how to take a blog post or make me realize that a post isn't working like I've previously written.
How do you concentrate? Do you close your eyes like Robin Hood suggested? Perhaps you leave them open and just tune out the rest of the world, staying focused on the task infront of you. Maybe you leave some background noise, like a TV or radio on, while you work or study. Whatever it is you do to concentrate, I hope it works for you. If it no longer does, try something new and maybe it will be even better than before.
Until next time, always do your best to concentrate and Keep Cooking with Character!
